What should I do if my childs baby tooth is knocked out?

Contact your childs pediatric dentist as soon as possible for favourable results.

What should I do if my childs permanent tooth is knocked out?

Follow the steps:

  1. Find the tooth.
  2. Gently rinse it with plain cold water without rubbing the tooth. (DO NOT CLEAN OR RUB WITH SOAP WATER)
  3. If possible, replace the tooth in the socket immediately and hold it with there with a clean gauze or wash cloth.
  4. If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket, place the tooth in a clean container with cold milk, saliva or water.
  5. Get to the pediatric dental office immediately. (Call the emergency number if it’s after hours).
  6. The faster you act, the better your chances of saving the tooth.

What if a tooth is chipped or fractured?

Contact your pediatric dentist immediately. Quick action can save the tooth by preventing further infections and also reduces the treatment needs.

 Follow the steps if the front tooth is fractured:

  1. Find the fractured tooth piece/fragment.
  2. Gently place in clean plain water.
  3. Take to to your pediatric dentist as soon as possible.
  4. The pediatric dentist may use this fragment and attach to the remaining tooth to give the most natural look.
  5. Fragment attachment is only done for permanent tooth.

What about a severe blow to the head?

You need immediate medical attention. A severe head injury can be life threatening. Let us keep in mind that emergency medical team might be able to reach you faster than you get to the hospital.

What if my child bleeds in the lips after trauma?

Don’t panic. Try to stop the bleeding by compression with a clean sterile cotton or cloth. Contact your child’s dentist for further help and evaluation.

How to prevent dental injuries?

Your child’s risk for dental injuries can be reduced greatly by following the steps :

  1. Reduce risk for severe oral injury in sports by wearing protective gear, including mouthguard.
  2. Always use a car seat for young children.
  3. Use seat belts for everyone else in the car.
  4. Child proof your home to prevent falls and electrical injuries.
  5. Regular dental check-ups provide your dentist an opportunity to discuss age-appropriate preventive strategies with your child.

How can parents reduce the risk of developing ECC to their children?

ECC is preventable infectious microbial disease. In order to reduce the risk of developing ECC. The first dental visit of the child should be scheduled at their eruption of first tooth or first birthday whichever comes earlier. Pediatric dentist will provide instruction regarding feeding and diet practices and demonstrate infant oral care measures and also provide anticipatory guidance.

Can dental decay/ECC can be reversed?

Yes, if parent can notice the early changes in their child’s teeth in form of white/ yellow brown spots in the enamel (non-cavitated), and should report to pediatric dentist without any further delay. Tooth decay can be stopped or reversed at this point. Enamel can repair itself by using minerals from saliva, and fluoride from professional application and other sources (tooth paste). Pediatric dentist can guide you to reverse the condition.

How to identify the early changes of ECC and how does early childhood caries look like?

Early childhood caries are cavities that most often show up on a child’s upper front teeth but can also affect other teeth. It first shows up as white spots near the gum line. Parent should do lift the lip examination to identify the early lesion. Pediatric dentist will guide you how to identify.
